My journey into humanitarian work began with the quiet strength of my parents’ generation. I grew up watching them live with incredible generosity, opening their homes to those in need, sharing the little they had with family, friends, and neighbors, and caring for people who could never repay them. Their selflessness became a part of me and shaped how I see the world.
But I also grew up witnessing another reality: the painful face of poverty and hunger in my homeland. I saw children go without food and families live without hope. Those experiences marked me deeply, and as a child I made a promise to myself: “If I ever have the chance to help, I will.”
When I moved to the United States, I believed I needed to wait until I was wealthy to give back. Over time, I realized that waiting meant losing precious time, and people needed help now. With a small group of friends, we began with what we had: our time, our resources, our commitment. Together we learned a powerful truth: making a difference doesn’t require grand gestures. It’s the collective impact of many small acts of kindness, done with love, that changes lives.
This is why Wegene was born. And this is why it continues to grow. Every smile we see, every family we support, every child who dares to dream again reminds us that kindness is never wasted. It transforms despair into hope and restores dignity to those who need it most.
My vision for Wegene is simple but powerful: to be a transparent and trusted organization that breaks the cycle of poverty, inspires hope, and uplifts children, families, and communities by removing the barriers that stand in their way.
Together, we can create a future where every child has the chance to thrive, every family has the chance to stand tall, and hope belongs to everyone.
